The Shack

I've recently finished reading a book called 'The Shack'....Actually I've read it 2 times so far, and will probably read it a third time very soon. It is gut-wrenching, thought provoking, and beautiful. Here is a snippet of something from it that has been bouncing around in my head for a while:

On the Law:
But can you clean your face with the same mirror that shows you how dirty you are? There is no mercy or grace in the rules, not even for one mistake. That's why Jesus fulfilled all of it for you -- so that it no longer has jurisdiction over you. And the Law that once contained impossible commands -- Thou shall not... -- actually becomes a promise we fulfill in you.

This book is rich with statements like this that challenge you to re-turn to the heart of God.

Rick, I love that exchange also. I can't remember where I posted it but I had made a comment about that very thing after my mom had told me she was really enjoying the book until she read the conversation about the 10 commandments. It made her mad and upset her. ( she wants them displayed in public) All I could do was laugh and say if that made her mad it would probably be a good part for her to go back and read again and again. She wasn't humored?

I have never read anything that is so effective in turning you inside out so gently.

I had breakfast this morning with a couple of guys that are going through a 'men's study' (I go to develop relationships, not for the study). When they got to a point in the study that said 'Commit to make the bible your moral authority', thought about this conversation. I had brought the book for one of the guys, so I opened it up and read that conversation. They couldn't argue with that, and they even liked it. One remarked, "I guess if you try to clean your face with the mirror, you only end up smudging the mirror." I loved it!
